LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced on Thursday the dissolution of the nation’s parliament and the calling of an early election, following the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa amid a corruption scandal.
The new elections are scheduled for March 10.
Rebelo de Sousa made his decision public during a nationwide televised address after meeting with the National Council of State, an advisory body composed of former politicians and other prominent public figures. Prior to this, he had met with the leaders of two political parties in parliament on Wednesday.
The President stated that Costa would continue to serve as the caretaker Prime Minister until the elections.
António Costa, a member of the Socialist Party, has been leading Portugal since 2015 and won a decisive election last year. However, he resigned shortly after Portuguese police conducted a large-scale raid on Tuesday as part of a corruption investigation, which resulted in the arrest of his chief of staff and four others, with one of his ministers named as a suspect.
In a speech to the nation just hours after his resignation, Costa maintained his innocence but acknowledged that he could not continue in his role.
The investigation, which led to the raids and arrests, is being overseen by a judge accused of misconduct and is linked to allegations of corruption involving elected officials. The inquiry also pertains to influence related to lithium mining concessions near the northern border with Spain, as well as plans to establish a green hydrogen plant and data center in the southern coastal town of Sintra.
